Naoki Yoshida was very careful when he announced it. Final Fantasy 14 is a global game and not every culture is as progressive as the west, as much as we’d all like to believe the world should head in that direction. So he announced that there will be a “bonding ceremony” that can take place between lovers or even friends that will grant them in game benefits for declaring this eternal bond. This bonding ceremony takes place, IN EORZEA, between two PLAYERS regardless of their race or gender.
What absolutely baffles me is that people are actually upset about this. The producers of this game are Japanese and we’ve all seen the Nintendo controversy concerning gay marriage… but the FF14 developers have the maturity to understand that these are characters in a game… not real people. A guy could play a female character and “bond” with another guy playing a male character. That’s two people of the same gender bonding… but its ok cause their characters are different genders? So why not allow two female or two male characters bond? It’s in game. Regardless of your feelings about homosexuality… ITS IN THE GAME.
The controversy surrounding this is just idiotic.
